“Fool For Your Loving” by Whitesnake off of their album, “Ready an' Willing” which came out in 1980 and featured Neil Murray on bass.

I always try to check out the suggestions I get, but if a song doesn’t immediately grab my attention, I’ll pass on it. If I’m going to spend the amount of time that I do, learning the song and getting it to the point where I can play it straight through without making any glaring errors, I have to really like it. Every so often the suggester strikes gold. When I clicked the link I immediately liked what I heard. It sounded like Bad Company on steroids to me…not that I’m a huge Bad Company fan, but there was something I really liked about the song…and the bass-line. It chugs. It walks. It’s got quick-twiddly bits. What’s not to like?

This version was recorded by the earlier version of the band which featured 3 former members of Deep Purple.. The Whitesnake I’m most familiar with is the 1987, super-group version which I was not a big fan of. You know…the Tawny Kitaen writhing on a car hood and the Rudy Sarzo licking his bass neck Whitesnake? (not that I’m knocking Rudy Sarzo, I think he’s great, especially on Ozzy’s live “Speak of the Devil” album) That, later, version of the band might not have been the catalyst for the whole “hair-band” movement, but they certainly gave it a big push forward.

The bass-line has some very quick, articulate and tasteful fills that I’d associate more with prog-rock or jazz than I would a fairly straight forward rock song. Each pre-chorus and chorus is played slightly differently which took a bit of memorization. As I was listening to the song, I’d note each tricky lick and think, “Well, that’s going to take a bit of effort.” and it did.

The riffs at 3:04 and 3:11 are very close to what he is playing rhythmically, but I changed a few of the notes to something I was more comfortable with in order to make the riffs a bit more clam proof (it really sucks to make a mistake that close to the end of the song).
Also, at 3:15, I’m pretty sure that he played both the high, fretted D along with the open D as I did. It just doesn’t sound as clunky as when he did it.
The two notes that follow the D-Octaves were inaudible (on what I’m listening to it on, anyway) but I figured, since he was moving up the fretboard, so would I, to complete the line.
I’m not sure, but something makes me think that he’s playing a fretless on this song. I don’t know if that’s something he was known for.
As the song neared the end I heard those quick rakes and was like, “Really? You couldn’t just lay back a little and take it easy during the fade out?”

I’m playing the first Guild bass that I got a few years back. It started it’s life as a fretted B-302A (the “A” is for “Ash”). It had been converted to a fretless when I bought it and I had frets reinstalled not long after I got it. It was also a 2-Pickup model which, like my Ric, I did not care for, so I had the neck p/u removed and had a new pick guard made by a company called “Chandler” which has templates for just about any guitar or bass you can imagine, even some real oddballs. I ordered a B-302 guard but asked them not to cut out an opening for the neck p/u.

1980年にリリースされ、ニール・マーレイがベースを務めたWhitesnakeのアルバム『Ready an' Willing』収録の「Fool For Your Loving」。

俺はよく「リクエストは受け付けないが、提案（サジェスト）なら受けることもある」と言っている。先週、俺の「Street of Dreams」のカバー動画に“windk100”氏がこんなコメントを残してくれた。
「まだやっていなければ、Whitesnakeの『Fool for your Loving』のオリジナル1980年バージョンをカバーする予定はありますか？ご検討いただけると幸いです！」

提案された曲はいつもチェックするようにしているが、すぐに心を掴まれなければ見送る。目立つミスをせずに最後まで通して弾けるようになるまで曲を覚え込むとなると、かなりの時間を費やすことになるので、自分自身が本当にその曲を気に入らなければならないからだ。だが、時々提案者が見事なアタリ（金鉱）を掘り当てることがある。リンクをクリックした瞬間、耳に入ってきた音がすぐに気に入った。まるでステロイドを打った（強化版の）Bad Companyのように聴こえたのだ…別に俺がBad Companyの大ファンというわけではないが、その曲とベースラインにはとても惹かれるものがあった。力強く刻み、ランニング（ウォーキング）し、素早いウネウネとしたフレーズもある。好きにならない理由があるだろうか？

このバージョンは、ディープ・パープルの元メンバー3人を擁していた初期のバンド構成によってレコーディングされたものだ。俺が一番馴染みのあるWhitesnakeは1987年のスーパーグループ時代だが、実はそちらはあまり好みではなかった。ほら…タニー・キティンが車のボンネットの上で身をよじらせたり、ルディ・サーゾがベースのネックを舐めたりしていたあのWhitesnakeだ（ルディ・サーゾをけなしているわけではない。特にオジーのライブ盤『Speak of the Devil』での彼は素晴らしいと思っている）。あの後期のバンド構成は「ヘア・メタル」ブーム全体の直接の引き金ではなかったかもしれないが、確実に大きな後押しとなった。

このベースラインには、かなり素早く、明瞭でセンスの良いフィルが入っており、かなりストレートなロックソングというよりは、プログレッシブ・ロックやジャズを連想させる。Bメロ（プレコーラス）やサビ（コーラス）に入るたびに少しずつプレイを変えているため、暗記するのに少々苦労した。曲を聴きながら、手ごわいフレーズに出くわすたびに「うーん、これは一筋縄ではいかないな」と思っていたが、案の定そうだった。
3:04と3:11のリフは、彼が弾いているリズムにかなり近いが、曲の終盤近くでミスをするのは本当に最悪なので、フレーズをより安全（ミスりにくく）にするために自分にとって弾きやすい音にいくつか変更した。
また、3:15では、俺もやったように彼もハイポジションのD（レ）の音と開放弦のDを同時に弾いていると確信している。ただ、彼が弾いた時は俺ほど不器用に聴こえないだけだ。
Dのオクターブに続く2つの音は（少なくとも俺が聴いている環境では）聞き取れなかったが、彼が指板上を上がっていたので、ベースラインを完成させるために俺も同じように指板を上がっていくことにした。
確信はないが、彼はこの曲でフレットレス・ベースを弾いているような気がしてならない。彼がフレットレスで知られていたかどうかは分からないが。
曲が終わりに近づくにつれ、あの素早いレイク（掃くようなピッキング）が聴こえてきて、「マジかよ？フェードアウトの最中くらい、少し力を抜いて楽に弾いてくれよ」と思わずにいられなかった。

俺が弾いているのは、数年前に手に入れた最初のGuild（ギルド）のベースだ。元々はフレットのある「B-302A」（Aはアッシュの意味）としてスタートした個体だ。購入した時にはフレットレスに改造されていたのだが、入手後すぐにフレットを打ち直してもらった。また、2ピックアップのモデルで、リッケンバッカー同様あまり好みではなかったので、ネック側のピックアップを取り外し、「Chandler」という会社に新しいピックガードを作ってもらった。この会社は、型破りなレア物も含め、思いつく限りのあらゆるギターやベースの型紙（テンプレート）を持っている。俺はB-302用のガードを注文し、ネックピックアップ用の穴を開けないよう依頼した。

トロイ、よくやったね！いつか自分でも動画をアップするつもりだよ、もっともアルバム通りに曲全体を100%通して完璧に弾くのはかなり難しいけどね。コメントの中には嬉しいものもあれば、いらっとするものもある。一つ言っておくなら、当時はプロデューサーのマーティン・バーチ（ディープ・パープル、アイアン・メイデンなど数多くを手がけた）は一部のプロデューサーのような****者ではなく、むしろバンドのメンバーにやりたいようにやらせてくれる人だった。（ちなみに、「Still Of The Night」時代のホワイトスネイクが好きな人のために言っておくと、あのアルバムで弾いていたのもルディ・サーゾではなく、この俺だよ。）
